I am going to make it a personal interest to live as frugally as possible. Any future blog post pertaining to the topic will be listed under the category “frugal living”.

Here’s a few plans:

1. Stick with a cash budget. I learned this from my “science of happiness” class. The professor, originally an economist turn psychologist, taught us: while money cannot buy us happiness… debt can surely bring missery. He then had a series of lectures about why we buy shit and blablabla…. Then eventually he went into the discussion that it’s harder to part with cash than to swipe plastic. By having a cash budget and eliminating credit cards, you make yourself less prone to compulsive spending and more prone to spending within your means.

2. Sleep on your purchases. Being a compulsive buyer, this is certainly something I need to do. Assessing what I need versus what I want. Thinking about the rate of return for a purchase. Is this a consumable item? Will I really want this a week from now? A month from now? A year from now?

3. Stick to the sale. Sales are great ways to stimulate the economy. It’s a great way to lure shoppers into a store. But remember, not everything is on sale! For example, say you’re looking to buy boots and there is a sale on boots. Stick to buying boots. I find this really hard for me since when I am in a department store, not only will I look and buy boots… there is a good chance at me buying a bag, a dress, or something else.

Walmart is known to do that sale lure tactic with their “low price” guarantee on certain items. You see that a certain alarm clock is on sale. It may not be the top of the line alarm clock, but it’s on sale for $4.99. You think you do NOT need an alarm clock but you want one now since it is on sale. But before you go and buy that alarm clock, you find yourself browsing through the isles and find that you don’t like the alarm clock that’s on sale for $4.99, you want the clock that’s retailed price at $20.99. You end up buying the “better” clock at retail value when in fact you never really needed one in the first place.

4. Only get what you need. Similar to the argument above. If you stick to your shopping list, you only get what you need. Don’t browse the isles. There is a study (which I need to find) that shows a majority of grocery shoppers end up buying more stuff beyond listed in their shopping list. I’m not really sure if #4 should be listed on its own. But hey, I’m not proofing my blog. So screw you.

5. Learn to do things for yourself. Things like cooking as opposed to eating out. Making your own clothes as opposed to buying them. Cleaning your own car as opposed to getting your car washed. While the service industry relies on us consumers… we shouldn’t be dependent upon them.

I wish I can go on… but I am incredibly sleepy. Goodnight.

How my mom would look like now. So much has happened. So much time has passed. I vaguely remember her face.

We all have them. Right now… I think I’m learning to be an adult. I don’t want to grow up.

I feel like I grew up in 2004 and was an adult for the past 5 years. And now that I’m out of college and have a job… I want to be a kid again.

I’m house hunting. I’m overtiming. I’m overwhelmed.

I need to be high off of life again. Not drowning my sorrows with a pint or two of beer.

It’s weird that in college everyone worries about their life ending once they’ve got their degree. I feel like life has begun. Maybe reborn?

I’m hungry.

I have work tomorrow.

I need a hobby of some sorts again.

It’s not fair that the pretty ones have it easier.

I came home and it felt like home. I haven’t had that feeling in a while. It makes it hard; I hope I don’t break down and cry during house hunting on Saturday.

I feel totally unprofessional.

I feel like I don’t cut it.

I feel lost.

I need to get it together. I will get it together. I will get together.

I will.

Thank god for blogs. I doubt anyone is interested in this.

Looking for a job.

Realizing the synergy between theory and practice.

Things to buy.

Things to pay for.

Things to sell.

Tired of school.

Love to learn.

Need direction.

I want. I need. I have.

Self loathing or self sufficient.

…I am trying to figure it out.

howdy everyone!

for the love of the raw image format, and for the love of image processing i’ve been wanting to acquire an SDK for a dSLR. at first, i was looking for the nikon SDK (since i am a nikon owner) but i’ve seen that i had to apply for it. i’ve read online that you have to be a “bona-fide developer” which i am not. i’m also not so sure what to put on my application and what i agree to as a developer if i get the sdk and agree to their terms and conditions.

so alternatively, i’ve seen online that the canon sdk is public, a GNU project. so no applications, no fuss, no rejection! which is great… but now i have to get a canon dSLR.

…oh and to my lovies, pictures are coming up soon. ^_^

I bought a Taylor Body Fat Percentage Analyzer from Target when I was into exercising two years ago. (I could not find the item on target.com but found it on amazon.com here) Around that time I was at 27% body fat and trying to get down to 16% body fat. Now (June 2008), I am at 36.9% body fat!!!! Holy moly! I am totally sad. Let’s look at the numbers.

In Summer 2006:
Height: 5′4″
Weight: 137 lbs
Body Fat Percentage: 27%
137 * 0.27 = 36.99 ~37 lbs fat
137 – 37 = 100 lbs lean weight

Goal Body Fat Percentage: 16%
(37 – x)/100 = 0.16 = 16%
37 – x = 16
x = 21 lbs fat

Goal weight
Given: (37 – 21)/100 = 16/100 = 16%
Goal weight: Denominator (lean weight) + Numerator (fat weight)
= 100 + 16
= 116 lbs

In Summer 2008
Height: 5′4″
Weight: 150 lbs :-(
Body Fat Percentage: 36.9% ~37%
150 * 0.37 = 55.5 lbs body fat
150 – 55.5 = 94.5 lbs lean weight :*-( that means I lost 5.5 lbs of muscle mass!

Goal Body Fat Percentage: 16%
(55.5 – x)/94.5 = 0.16 = 16%
55.5 – x = 15.12
x = 40.38 lbs fat

Goal weight
Given: (55.5 – 40.38)/94.5 = 15.12/94.5 = 16%
Goal weight: Denominator (lean weight) + Numerator (fat weight)
= 94.5 + 15.12
= 109.62 lbs ~110 lbs

Since it is highly unlikely that I will drop 40lbs of body fat, let’s pretend that I regain the 5.5 lbs of lean muscle mass, leaving me with a lean body mass (LBM) of 100 lbs. Also, let’s be soft on the goal body fat percentage (BF%) and change the goal from 16% to 22%. This means, I would have to drop from 150 lbs to 122 lbs. My goals would then be to: Gain 5.5 muscle mass, lose 22.5 lbs fat ((150 – 122) – 5.5).
